Hey there! I personally LOVE my major and my general college experience with it. I guess I should clarify, I go to BYU which isn’t primarily an art university, but has a huge and well respected art department that I’m a part of. The classes I take can be pretty different, but tbh the default structure on an art class here are 3 hour long classes where you are drawing/painting/whatever!
In figure drawing classes we draw on 18 x 24 notepads in front of a live model, and give them breaks every 20-ish minutes which make the three hours not so bad haha. In other drawing/painting/whatever classes it’s usually similar where the professor might talk for he first half hour or something and give a lecture or even demo what you will be doing (you just sit and watch them paint or something) and then the rest of the time you do your own thing and kinda chill with your classmates.
Honestly I really love the art classes here because they are SO laid back. The classes usually aren’t bigger than 20 people (usually there’s like, 15, and I even had a class with 6 people in it once) and everyone is really chill and you can talk about stuff or listen to music and even get up and walk around/take breaks/get food any time. Of course some days are different where the teacher may lecture the whole time or there’s a guest artist giving a presentation, but it’s always really helpful and only sometimes boring, and that’s less frequent than just working on stuff. And then when things are due usually there’s a critique and you go through everyone’s stuff, but that’s only in some classes. Some teachers work you harder than others naturally, and like it can range from 10 full pages of hand drawings outside of class a week on top of everything else to like, literally watching a movie instead of doing anything for class. In my narrative class we watched the Four Feathers to learn about the hero’s journey and that teacher brought us popcorn.
tldr: i love being an art major because it’s a really chill, tight knit community of nice people and you go to class and draw all day! The hours can be REALLY long sometimes, but you’re free enough to get up and walk around whenever that it’s usually not really an issue. I love it! Non-art classes just aren’t the same, even if they’re two hours shorter haha.
